A Sa’idi is a person from Upper Egypt usually seen wearing a turban/headscarf. In Egypt, Saiidi means someone who is simple and honest – a lovable, gullible character with salt-of-the-earth village simplicity. To call someone “Saiidi” is a local term of endearment, and is used colloquially to describe anything (including music) in an uncomplicated ‘naive’ style (similar to beladi). Saiidi is also a traditional cane dance from El Saiid, Upper Egypt, also known as Taktib.
