From the Arabic for “cut in half” or ‘divided’. Called divided possibly because one half of the pattern is in 2/4 the other in 4/4. Very popular Egyptian rhythm. The root of many oriental grooves and songs. Maksoum is an extremely versatile rhythm -  it can be played slow for classical Arabic music and for dancing it can be played fast.
